Kay is a Colorado cyclist and lives in Boulder. She likes a good adventure and maybe goes a little too far sometimes...

During the off season my bike team, Team Ten20 Cycling, got a new name and a new look. The nail salon that had sponsored the team for years decided to close its doors or sell to a new owner, either way, the key sponsorship was over. The team rallied and decided to carry on and just unveiled the new team name and kit at our kickoff meeting. Our new handle is ‘Petunia Mafia’ but the mantra remains the same – to empower, encourage, and educate women cyclists.

With over 200 members, Petunia Mafia embraces all types of cycling – road, mountain, cyclocross, and triathlon. Many of the women participate and/or compete in several disciplines but just as many ride for the sheer joy of riding. Each week has organized no drop rides (i.e. they won’t leave you in the dust), several weekend destination trips are scattered throughout the season, and fun events like yoga and happy hours are thrown in for good measure.

I have to admit I originally joined for the kit – a new design is created each season and it’s always a striking mix of sexy/feminine/sporty. This year’s design takes a page from the denim playbook, adds a nod to old time gangsters in pinstripe, and sprinkles in a few girly flowers.

Welcome to a new season of cycling with the Petunia Mafia!
